Superintendent Joe Carter welcomed all 250 staff members of the Algona Community School District—including teachers, support personnel, bus drivers, and custodial staff—for the official kickoff of the 2026–2027 school year.

The full-staff assembly opened with recognition of the food service team for providing breakfast, followed by appreciation for the operations and facilities crew whose summer work prepared the district’s buildings. Carter also highlighted the efforts of central duplicating and IT personnel, who processed hundreds of supply shipments and configured thousands of devices to prepare for the return of students.

Mr. Carter briefed staff on key administrative updates, mandatory legislative training requirements, and upcoming scheduling details for the in-service week. 

Addressing recent legislative and policy updates, Carter emphasized that the district's core focus remains centered on student-first decision-making and supporting staff through operational changes.

A significant portion of the address highlighted district progress in attendance and academic performance. Over the past two years, collaborative efforts reduced the district’s chronic absenteeism rate from 21.2% down to 9.8%.

Looking ahead to the new academic year, district leadership challenged staff to build upon these results. Primary instructional priorities for the year will focus on increasing student engagement through daily reading, writing, and critical thinking, while maintaining high expectations and support for every learner across all district classrooms.
