The Algona Band program celebrated a historic, rewarding, and whirlwind week of achievements following standout performances at the 99th Annual Iowa Bandmasters Association (IBA) Conference in Des Moines. The monumental week kicked off on Monday, May 11, with the final concerts of the year for the 5th grade and 7th/8th grade bands, followed by Tuesday’s sendoff concerts for the 6th grade and Algona High School (AHS) ensembles. Both groups presented extended programs in preparation for the conference, an honor earned after a rigorous blind audition process in December. Evaluated by a panel of judges, their selection uniquely distinguishes them as the top 6th Grade and 3A High School bands in the entire state of Iowa.

Prior to their departure for the capital, the high school band was honored with a special sendoff assembly by their peers. During the event, the band performed two selections for the student body, including a special collaboration with Sgt. Michael W. Burner (pictured right). A renowned trombonist and educator based in Washington D.C., Sgt. Burner is a musician with the prestigious United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” and a freelance artist who has performed globally and for multiple U.S. presidents.

The historic day arrived on Friday, May 15, demanding an early start for the dedicated musicians. The AHS band gathered at the school at 4:30 AM to load equipment and depart for their 9:00 AM performance at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, while the 6th grade band followed with an 8:15 AM departure for their 1:00 PM showcase. Both ensembles delivered exceptional performances, earning high praise from the music educators and band directors in attendance.

The performances were made even more memorable by introductions from close friends of the program. Leon Kuehner (pictured bottom left), an IBA icon and mentor to AHS Director Mr. Liebl, introduced the high school band, while Nick Menke (pictured bottom right), an Algona High School alumnus and friend of 6th Grade Director Mr. Kissinger, introduced the middle school ensemble. Algona High School Principal Jared Cecil (pictured bottom center) also attended the conference, addressing both the bands and the audience. Cecil emphasized that this milestone achievement was no accident, noting that it required a unified team effort, immense commitment, and countless hours of practice during early mornings and late nights.

On behalf of the entire Algona Community School District, there is an overwhelming sense of pride in these student-musicians and their directors, whose immense dedication, early mornings, and unwavering commitment have rightfully earned them a place on the statewide stage as the absolute best in Iowa. This historic milestone not only sets an inspiring benchmark for future generations of musicians in our schools but also builds a strong foundation for the bright future of the Algona Band program. The incredible talent and work ethic displayed by these students assure us that this is just the beginning, and we are deeply grateful for the community's steadfast support as we look forward to watching this program continue to reach new heights of excellence in the years to come.
