Rolling into Fun: The Roller Skating Unit!

Our 3rd and 4th graders at Lucia Wallace are currently "wheeling" through one of the most anticipated times of the year: the Roller Skating Unit!

The gym has been transformed into a temporary rink, filled with the sounds of gliding wheels and plenty of laughter. Whether they are seasoned pros or stepping onto eight wheels for the very first time, the energy in the building is electric.

There is nothing quite like the first day of the skating unit. The gym is usually filled with a mix of nervous excitement and a fair amount of "wall-hugging" as students find their center of gravity. However, the progress seen in just a few days is nothing short of remarkable.

Learning Aspects to the Roller Skating Unit

Building Bravery: For many, the biggest hurdle is simply letting go of the bleachers. Once they realize that falling is just part of the learning process, their confidence sky-rockets.

Developing Skills: Students are practicing more than just moving forward; they’re learning how to start, stop safely, and navigate around their peers.

Peer Support: One of the highlights has been watching the students encourage one another. It’s common to see a practiced skater offering a hand or a word of advice to a classmate who is still finding their balance.

Why We Skate

Beyond the pure "fun factor," roller skating is a powerhouse for physical development. It challenges the students' core stability, cardiovascular endurance, and bilateral coordination. Seeing the determination on their faces as they master a turn or successfully cross the gym without assistance is a testament to their hard work.

A big thank you to Mrs. Kira Carroll and our PE department for coordinating this unit and providing such a fun way for our students to build coordination and confidence!
